The Peonies

Chronicles of Chaos

Butter fingers

July18

I was at the supermarket earlier to grab some soy milk when I turned to see butter further down the aisle. Remembering that I need to get some bread spread 2 weeks ago (try saying bread spread quickly for 20 times) I dragged my basket over, gave a quick glance and froze. There were more than 20 different types of spreads, ranging from canola, sunflower, olive and vegetable oil. Then there were the ones that are a mix of different vegetable oils, some with  more polyunsaturated oils, some were monounsaturated oils, others were lactose free and don’t even get me started on the ones that taste, smells and look like butter but are not.

Normally I would have just bought butter, or softened butter spreads (only when I’m feeling really posh that day). But because I’ve read much about how nasty animal protein and fats might be, I thought it might be time for a healthy switch. Never would I expect that picking the right margarine takes as much skills as a nuero-surgeon performing a biopsy.

The more interesting part, was upon doing a quick research on the internet, margarines and spreads are deemed way more unhealthy compared to butter! I shall spare you the details of the study but in nutshell, vegetable oils are added with about a thousand other chemicals to make it tasty, spreadable and yellow, and then processed with super high heat that renders the end product with zero nutritional value. Polyunsaturated fats are also rumoured to have caused multiple types of cancers.

I was reminded that at the end of the day, balance is everything. We need a balance of various “good” and “bad” stuff in our system to keep it running. So don’t be afraid. Forgot I said anything at all.

Why is everything Nasa rocket science nowadays? Grandmama had it so much easier in her days.
